“Medicines manufactured in Sri Lanka, by Sri Lankans, for Sri Lankans & to the World”

The story of the Sri Lanka Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (SLPMA) begins in the year 1956, with the establishment of the first privately owned Pharmaceutical Manufacturing facility. In the six decades since, its membership has grown to include multinational pharmaceutical companies, established local Conglomerates, innovative new ventures and the State Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Corporation

SLPMA members manufacture high quality medicines in factories approved and monitored by the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) of Sri Lanka and operating in line with the World Health Organisation’s Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) guidelines. Since 2015 they’ve provided over 80 essential medicines for the government sector through a Guaranteed Buy back scheme, accounting for 24% of medicines used in the government sector, reducing emergency purchases, quality failures and volatile delivery of products that used to be the case earlier.
Employing 2000 people directly, and supporting the livelihood of over 20,000 indirectly, SLPMA is looking toward a future with the members actively investing over Rs. 15 billion over the past five years on capacity building and market expansion, setting up new plants and upgrading current facilities to enhance the manufacture of a wider range of medicines and infrastructure for the Sri Lankan market and for export.
Currently holding 15% of the local pharmaceuticals market the SLPMA aims to help the country save billions of dollars of annual expenditure on pharmaceutical imports by increasing the production of world-class pharma.

Our History

Sri Lanka got its first privately owned Pharmaceutical Manufacturing facility in the year 1956 with the opening of the [name] factory. Soon, several other companies joined the fray in the form of global giants establishing local production and it was soon apparent that a professional body comprised of all private manufacturers was necessary to promote the interest of manufacturers engaged in the pharmaceutical trade so that the industry will grow and prosper.
So it was that on the 29th of October 1963 that members of the fraternity met at the premises of Glaxo Allenburys to inaugurate the Ceylon Pharmaceutical Manufactures’ Association.
In its first order of business the Association appointed Mr. P.E. Jones of Glaxo Allenburys (Ceylon) Ltd as its first Chairman, in the company of Mr. G.F. Alexander of Reckitt & Colman (Ceylon) Ltd, Mr. C.W. Freyzer of M.S.J. Industries (Ceylon) Ltd, Mr. J.L. Fernandez of Warner Hudnet (Lanka) Ltd and Mr. B.Richard Fernando of Pfizer-Dumex Ltd.
Thus was born the organization that would go on to become the Sri Lanka Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association, the premier industry body for local producers of pharmaceuticals.
